NTJ planned attacking Independence Day celebrations and religious procession
COLOMBO (The Island/ANN) – Terrorist organisation National Thawheed Jamaat had considered attacking the Independence Day celebration or the Esala Perahera, a major Buddhist procession, before deciding to attack churches and tourist hotels on Easter Sunday 2019.
Zahran Hashim and his National Thawheed Jamaat (NTJ) had considered attacking the Independence Day Celebration or the Esala Perahera before deciding to carry out attacks on Easter Sunday, the Presidential Commission of Inquiry probing the Easter Sunday carnage was informed on Friday.
OIC of CID’s Special Branch, Lalitha Geethanjana Dissanayake made these revelations. Geethanjana had led the investigation on the van with a bomb, which was defused by security forces while it was parked near the St. Anthony’s Church the day after the Easter Sunday attacks.
He said that after the detonation they found pieces of a driver’s licence that belonged to Alawdeen Mohammed Muwad. Dissanayake said that they hsd recovered the mobile phones of Muwad and his wife. However former CID Director, Shani Abeysekara handed those phones to foreign investigators without a court order.
