Brunei longhouse marks end of harvest festival

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/ANN) - The committee members and Women’s Bureau of the Kampong Teraja Longhouse organised a Ngiling Bidai to mark the end of Gawai celebration which celebrated bountiful harvest at the longhouse recently.

More than 200 attendees celebrated the festive occasion. Among them was President of Lions Club of Bandar Seri Begawan (Lions Club BSB) Sunil Ramchandani who was the guest of honour.

Welcoming the guest of honour and attendees was the chairman of the organising committee Burong anak Nyanggau and Head of Women’s Bureau of the longhouse Embong Munah accompanied by a series of traditional gulingtangan performances.

Also present were officer-in-charge of the Labi Police Station P/Insp Janatun Na’em bin Haji Abdul Rahim as well as members from the Mukim and Village Consultative Councils (MPMK) of Mukim Labi.

After a series of speeches by the organisers and the guest of honour, the event continued with a Ngajat performance by the Pelapis Bureau of the longhouse as well as the Gawai song performances.

Lions Club BSB also handed over donations to children as well as elderly residing in Kampong Teraja.

Previously, the club conducted several work visits to the longhouse to provide aids such as installation of curtains for the communal area of the longhouse in February this year.

As a show of appreciation to the guest of honour, the chairman of the ceremony and representative from the women’s bureau handed over a small gift. The guest of honour reciprocated with a gift which was received by ex-Head of the Kampong Teraja Longhouse, Jamit anak Lasah.

To conclude the celebration, the guest of honour and representatives rolled up a piece of mat which marked the end of June and the Gawai celebration.
