Belait beach clean-up campaign marks Earth Hour

KUALA BELAIT, Brunei (Borneo Bulletin/ANN) - More than 16 staff members from Aker Solutions participated in a beach clean-up near the Chinese temple in Kuala Belait recently as part of the company’s quarterly activities.

Organised in conjunction with Earth Day 2018, the clean-up campaign aimed to raise awareness on the importance of keeping the beaches of Brunei clean from trash.

Present were Ian Durham, Contract and Procurement Manager of Aker Solutions, and Ian Aitchison, HSSE Manager of Aker Solutions.

“This is the fourth time we have done this beach cleaning campaign over the past three years,” said Durham in an interview with Sunday Bulletin.

“Brunei has beautiful beaches, and it’s such a pity rubbish is dumped on them.”

Ian Aitchson noted that the beach clean-up was an opportunity to remove plastic materials.

“Plastic is a killer, it’s all over the ocean, and it is a great threat to marine life,” he said.

“There has been one or two beach cleaning campaigns held every year, but for this year, we have planned at least four campaigns – one in each quarter of the year.

“We hope to involve our business partners in the effort as they are all excited about the upcoming campaigns, which will be larger than the one held today,” Aitchson added.

More than 75 bags of trash were collected at the end of the hour-long volunteer operation.
