Vietnamese fishing boat fined NT$1 million for poaching in Taiwan waters

TAIPEI (The China Post/ANN) - Taiwan authorities fined a Vietnamese fishing ship caught poaching in its exclusive economic zone NT$1 million (US$32,530), before the boat expelled from the country's waters, the Fisheries Agency (FA) said Thursday.

The Vietnamese fishing boat — identified as BD.97277.TS — was discovered by two coast guard vessels on Oct. 2, 127 nautical miles southwest of Taiwan's southernmost point of Eluanbi, according to an FA statement.

Authorities determined that the crew was poaching within Taiwan's exclusive economic zone based on video footage and interviews collected by coast guard officers. The fishing boat had a catch of 40 longtail tuna and 40 mahi mahi when it was apprehended.

The captain received an NT$1 million fine before the boat was escorted out of Taiwan waters. It was the third Vietnamese fishing ship to be fined NT$1 million for poaching in Taiwan's exclusive economic zone since 2016, according to FA tallies.
