Revealing arrests related to Easter bombings will undermine investigations - PM

COLOMBO (The Island/ANN) - Prime Minister says revealing the exact number of persons arrested in connection with the Easter bombings could undermine ongoing investigations. A large number of persons taken into custody for direct involvement in the bombings, some for performing transactions with the perpetrators of the attacks.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday said that he wouldn’t reveal the exact number of persons who had been arrested in connection with their direct involvement with multiple Easter Sunday bombings as such a revelation could undermine ongoing investigations.

In addition to the large number of persons taken in for their direct involvement in the bombings, some responsible for transactions with the perpetrators of the attacks were in custody, Premier Wickremesinghe said.

The UNP leader said so addressing members of the ‘UNP Media Brigade’ at Temple Trees yesterday. New Director of the ‘UNP Media Brigade’ Ratnapura District MP Hesha Vithana was also present.

Wickremesinghe said that even international agencies were quite surprised over the speedy progress made in the investigations. The Premier pointed out that the government was able to take legal action against terrorists within a month after the bombings.

Nearly 260 perished in attacks.

Wickremesinghe appreciated tangible measures taken by the police and the armed forces to bring the situation under control.

The PM warned distractions could delay and undermine ongoing investigations.

Security authorities were in the process of inquiring into all persons who maintained links with terrorists, the Premier said.

He said their responsibility was to bring investigations to a successful conclusion not to reveal everything before the media. The premier said that neither he nor his ministers would reveal details. Instead, the police would brief the media, the premier said.
