Indonesia-Laos sign MoUs on drug control, education

BOGOR, Indonesia (The Jakarta Post/ANN) - Indonesia and Laos ink deals on drug control and education.

Indonesia and Laos on Thursday signed three memorandums of understanding (MoUs) during the visit of Laos Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith to the archipelago.

National Narcotics Agency (BNN) head Budi Waseso and Laos Public Security Deputy Minister Somvang Thammasith signed an MoU on the control of narcotics and psychotropic substances at the Bogor Palace in West Java.

Meanwhile, Education and Culture Minister Muhadjir Effendy, and Research and Higher Education Minister Muhammad Nasir represented Indonesia in signing two MoUs on education with Laos Education and Sports Minister Sengdeuane Lachanthaboun.

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and Sisoulith witnessed the signing ceremony, which was held after a bilateral meeting between the two leaders.

Jokowi expressed his hope that the MoU on drugs would soon be followed up with a concrete agreement, so that it could immediately be implemented to deal with drug abuses in Indonesia and Laos.

In the agreement on education, the President added, the two countries would carry out student exchange programmes at both primary and university levels.

"Indonesia is always committed to supporting Laos in capacity building. We welcome Laotian students who want to pursue their higher education in Indonesia," he said.
