Govt praises THPC’s achievements, urges more sustainable development

VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN) - The government has called on Theun-Hinboun Power Company Limited (THPC) to build upon previous outstanding achievements in implementing its expansion project to benefit the nation’s economic development.

The call was made by Deputy Prime Minister Somdy Duangdy during his attendance at a medal and certificate awards ceremony highlighting the company’s 20 years of achievements in hydropower.

In his keynote speech at the awards ceremony yesterday, Mr Somdy said THPC and the Theun-Hinboun expansion project had contributed to large-scale socio-economic development through engagement in local recruitment, infrastructure and public facilities development.

“Over the past two decades, the government has witnessed that THPC has performed a great task in energy development based on environmentally-friendly methods, particularly through its expansion project and thanks to close supervision by the Ministry of Energy and Mines,” he said.

Mr Somdy said the government had received regular reports about the project from the company and its implementation had exceeded expectations.

“THPC’s implementation of the expansion project has been in line with Party and government policies on national energy development as well as international standards,” he said, noting that the company had highlighted the importance of the energy sector as a key driver of economic growth.

The Deputy Prime Minister said the expansion project was a significant model for learning about the management and generation of electricity.

“THPC plays a critical role in the development of the energy market. It is hoped that the company will continue to be one of the leading electricity suppliers for increasing demand in both domestic and foreign markets,” Mr Somdy said.

He also called for the company to keep up its excellent performance to become a model for private-owned investment projects.

“In addition, the company will need to continue to develop infrastructure and other necessary facilities to transform the surroundings into an attractive tourist site with a pleasant environment under the theme of sustainable development,” Mr Somdy added.

At the ceremony, THPC Deputy General Manager, Mr Soulideth Baomanikhoth, highlighted the main activities of the expansion project and the company’s contribution to socio-economic development over the past 20 years.

The event was also attended by Minister of Energy and Mines, Dr Khammany Inthirath, senior ministry officials and provincial energy personnel.

During the ceremony, 140 government employees received certificates of congratulations from the Minister of Energy and Mines, 10 individuals were awarded a Labour Order Class II and two entities received a Labour Order Class II.

A total of 70 individuals received certificates of congratulations from the government, 49 individuals were awarded Labour Medals and 21 individuals received a Labour Order Class III.
