Bruneians among 250 delegates to participate in Asean youth conference

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/ ANN) - Some 250 delegates comprising students and young professionals from 10 Asean member countries including Brunei Darussalam are expected to participate at the Asean Youth Conference 2017 in Pampanga, the Philippines running from November 10-13, 2017 to be held in conjunction with Asean’s 50th anniversary celebration.

The conference, carrying the theme ‘Towards Asean Community Vision 2025 – It All Begins with Youth’, will provide a platform to help Asean youth engage more effectively in planning, implementing, evaluating, and tackling issues impacting the regions’ youth.

Organised by the Asean Youth Organization (AYO), a not-for-profit, membership-based youth organisation with over 265,000 supporters, organisers say the conference will bring together various stakeholders to develop solutions to the problems Asean youth face now, and as the region races towards Asean Community Vision 2025.

Throughout the four-day conference discussions will focus on political-security, sociocultural, and economics. The ‘Pampanga Youth Resolution’ will be drafted at the end of the conference.

Thomson Ch’ng, founder and Project Director of AYO, said, “Today’s youths are arising to shape the future of their countries and the world. They want to be heard, included in decision-making processes, and more importantly, to make changes.

“This conference will give Asean youth an opportunity to raise their concerns, discuss solutions, and formulate an action plan that we hope will gain widespread support from Asean member nations and civil society.”

Ch’ng said Asean youths aged between 18-35 with a thorough knowledge of the Asean Community’s three pillars – Political, Security, Community, and an interest in sustainable development, are welcome to apply.

He said an independent committee comprising AYO representatives, and Asean stakeholders will study all submissions to ensure Asean Youth Conference 2017 delivers a resolution appropriate for the 50th anniversary of Asean.

The conference will also feature panel discussions from Asean leading experts, roundtable discussion, unique social events and an exhibition.

The Asean Youth Conference (AYC) 2017 is the foremost opportunity for inspiring youth leaders who are aspiring future political, business and community leaders to learn about developing issues and trends in the Asean region, discuss and debate on best practices and innovative approaches to address key challenges in the region as we work in partnership with Asean stakeholders to achieve the Asean Community Vision 2025.
